Welcome to openLCA.conf 2025

10 – 11 April 2025 Berlin, Germany

The open openLCA LCA Conference

After a sold-out first edition, we would like to give a warm welcome to openLCA.conf 2025, taking place in Berlin from the 10–11 April 2025. Doubling our event capacity from last year, we’re excited to bring together experts from across the field for two days of lectures, workshops and discussions on LCA research and practice.

Since its creation in 2007, openLCA has grown to become one of the most widely used LCA softwares both in its own right, and also as part of an interconnected family of LCA tools.  Thanks to its low acquisition barrier and available resources, people all across the world are able to use openLCA for studies, projects and research.

Timeline

Sessions

1. Supply Chains and Circular Economy

CBAM and openLCA

Cross-Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will apply in its definitive regime from 2026, while the current transitional phase lasts between 2023 and 2025. This session will involve talks around how to tackle this with openLCA.

The New Supply Chain Act

The Supply Chain Act (Lieferkettengesetz) aims to protect the rights of people who produce goods for the German market.

In trade and production, basic human rights are repeatedly violated within global supply chains, with child labour, exploitation, discrimination and inadequate protection under labour law. Since 2023, the law on corporate due diligence in supply chains has required German companies to do more to meet their global responsibilities.

This session revolves around sustainable supply chain management and social sustainability.

Broader Sustainability Assessments

This session will look at sustainability assessments beyond LCA.

Circular Economy

This session will bring the discussion of Circular Economy into Life Cycle Assessments. Practices of how to integrate CE into LCA and vice versa.

2. Data and Assessments

Database Management and Creation

This session will look at methods, issues, and highlights of database management and database creation for LCA and sustainability assessments.

Advancing Life Cycle Inventories

Showing advancements in life cycle inventory modelling: quality assurance, uncertainties, closing data gaps, etc.

Advancing Life Cycle Impact Assessment

Showing advances in LCIA modelling, regionalisation, social impacts, sustainability impacts.

3. openLCA in Industry

openLCA Tools and Integration

This session will explore the state-of-the art of tools related, based or derived from openLCA.

openLCA in Industry

openLCA is only one of the software developed by GreenDelta. openLCA works in an ecosystem of tools, from the LCA Collaboration Server which is general to all users, to different specialised tools for specific companies - sometimes developed by GreenDelta, sometimes by the companies themselves.

This session will explore advances of industry sustainability assessments.

EPDs

Showcasing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) in openLCA.

Resource and Attribute Accounting in LCA/EPD

There is significant misalignment of the various allocation and attribution accounting (RECs, Mass Balance) techniques that can be misleading to consumers. Discussion on the various outlooks and how to come together as practitioners for better alignment of these topics and protect the truth of environmental declarations.

4. LCA Focused Topics and Case Studies

Food and Agriculture

This session will focus on food and agriculture related LCA studies and sustainability advancements.

Social LCA

Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA) is a methodology to assess social impacts along the life cycle of a product or service. It has gained more and more attention in recent years. Next to the update of the UNEP guidelines, methodological sheets and their pilot projects between 2020 and 2022, an ISO standard addressing S-LCA is currently being drafted. Advancement took also place in the PSILCA database approaches developed by GreenDelta for identifying social hotspots. Among others, this includes inventory data, indicators and calculation procedures. This session addresses all aspects of using a social LCA database, such as methodological topics, general challenges and possible solutions, openLCA plugins, etc.

Renewable Energy Systems and Storage

This session will be about Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Costing (LCC) of renewable energy systems like photovoltaics, wind power or green hydrogen electrolysis, including studies and projects on storage systems like batteries for electricity or different storage systems for hydrogen.

Workshops

This year we will be hosting workshops as part of openLCA.conf to keep the discussion flowing:

Circularity Package| LCA Database Quality | Social Indicators

Specialised Trainings

As an extra, a variety of on-site training sessions will be available to book. Sessions will take place prior to the conference on 9th April:

Basic | Social LCA | Python & openLCA | EPD Trainings

For openLCA.conf 2025 we are offering a number of sponsorship options with a wide range of perks and benefits. Go to sponsorship packages.

Venue

After last year’s sold out event, we will be doubling the capacity of openLCA.conf 2025. Venue details to be announced soon!

openLCA.conf ’24

Hosted between April 15-16th in the vibrancy of Berlin, openLCA.conf ’24 marked the creation of a platform that brings openLCA users together. We had the pleasure of facilitating the deep exchange of insights and ideas through sessions spanning the ecosystem of openLCA, data, LCA across industries, case studies and more in the form of keynotes, panel discussions and presentations.

The conference demonstrated the tool’s wide applications, use cases, allowed for insights from us as the creators and enabled discussions to further propel the LCA space for meaningful impact. It was especially fulfilling to witness and engage in focussed interactions within the community. We hope to keep evolving this platform every year and enable more learnings, discussions and outcomes. Stay on the lookout for openLCA.conf 2025!
